The Department is charged with the implementation and development of government policy in the areas of enterprise, employment promotion, trade development, the regulation of business and the protection of workers. Detailed responsibilities include: industrial development policy, science and technology, company and patent law, the registration of companies, co-operatives and friendly societies, control of mergers, distributive trade legislation, trade policy and trade promotion, consumer protection, industrial relations and various matters affecting the conditions of employment of workers including occupational safety, health and welfare.
